Its Tiki Time- an accessible bar story

We recently went to Trader Sam's Tiki bar at the Disneyland Hotel. We love this bar and have gone many times! I wanted to talk about how accessible this bar is. As we all know, bars tend to not be the most accessible places. I mean bar stools, am I right?!?

The inside of Trader Sam's does have an accessible bar area. Disney's policy is that people have to move if you come into the bar and there aren't any tables and chairs available. The line to get in is always huge and the tables are usually occupied so the accessible bar is a good bet.

Floor space for service dogs is also very limited. We took Nola once and the only table we could get was by the door. Nola is always distracting for people and alcohol only compounds this. Between drunk people almost stepping on her or trying to pet her, it wasn't the best place for Nola.

Needless to say I was glad when they added the new outdoor space around Trader Sam's and Tangaroa Terrace.

My first tip is to park at the Disneyland Hotel and walk through the lobby. Its much shorter than going through Downtown Disney and you skip security, which can be a major hassle for people with disabilities. The hotel is really cool, like with this neat vintage map of the park, chairs made out of old teacups, and a couple of gift shops you can check out.

Once you get to Trader Sam's you will find accessible seating right in front of the bar. This is reserved for people with disabilities and any non-disabled people sitting here will be asked to move if that's where you would like to sit.

I sometimes have a hard time even with low bar stools because I am so short. Luckily the bar stools can be moved and you can swap it out for a chair with a back. For me this was more comfortable, easier to sit in, and better if you have balance issues.

The last time we went we lucked out and snagged one of the lounge tables. A nice couple were leaving and offered it to us. These lounge tables are the way to go. they are so comfy and everything can be moved easily for usability and accessibility.

and of course there is lots of room for Nola to stretch out without being "in the way."

We met my friend Emily here, its a great place for food and cocktails.

We got this amazing Kālua-style Poutine for $12 to share. We ordered it without the pork because of my Gerd issues. The waitress actually said it was better without the pork! I often feel bad when Wes has to miss out on something food-related because of me but even he said the pork wasn't needed.  You can get lots of food needs met here from gluten free, to vegan, and more.

Then there's this beauty. She's on the secret menu which means you have to know what to order because its unlisted. It's called "Not a Dole Whip," not to be confused with the Dole Whip floats. Don’t let the name confuse you, this tastes just like a spiked pineapple Dole Whip, except the whip and the pineapple are separated. While we’re not 100 percent sure what’s in there, we do know it’s magical! It might be the number 1 Trader Sam's drink this blogger would choose, even though I can only have a few sips.

(If you prefer the real thing scroll down but I say get both)

I have had a hard time ordering drinks at Trader Sam's because of all the acidic juices. Fortunately they can customize many things on the menu to fit your dietary needs.

They now serve Dole Whip at Trader Sam's so if you are in the Anaheim area but can't make it into the park head here. The Servings are much bigger and you can get it with rum.

Nola and I definitely recommend Trader Sam's
